The magnolia is the state flower for two states, Mississippi and
Louisiana. It is one of the toughest to recreate in silk ribbon, but
since I live in Mississippi, I had to figure out a way to do one that looked
passable.
After piecing the block, I rubber stamped an image of a magnolia on to the fabric
using water erasable ink. The stamp was used as a reference for petal
placement and size. I started with the green and then used the cream,
placing a Japanese Ribbon Stitch over the leaves and petals, starting on the
outside and working my way inward. Then I used a bullion stitch for
the branch and a French knot to finish the center. Afterward I went
over the design with a wet Q-Tip to pick up any stray traces of the water
erasable ink. |
