Needlepainting has been around for a very long time. It's has just recently been given the name of Needlepainting. One ply threads are used, such as silk, or cotton floss. The most frequently used stitches are long/short and satin. Stem and French knots are also used. The trick in needlepainting is to get the subject that you are stitching to look as life like as possible. This can be difficult at times, especially when you are using several shades in one color family and the colors are so close. If you are interested in trying needlepainting, I would suggest starting out with something small and a simple design.

You can see how Dean's original design has been simplified for neeedlepainting.
