Supplies:
- 15 inch length of jacquard or fancy ribbon, 1 ½" wide
- 4 inch length of same ribbon for needle cushion
- 14 inch length of fusible fleece ½" narrower than ribbon
- 3 inch length of fusible fleece for needle cushion ½" narrower than ribbon
- matching thread for ribbon
- matching beads
- beading thread
- rattail cording, old necklace, etc.
- 1 lobster clasp
- One 7 mm wooded bead
Scissors Case:
Construction:
Iron fusible fleece to wrong side of 15" length of ribbon, allowing ¼" seam allowance on all sides.
Iron under seam allowance on the two raw ends.
Fold in half, pinning in several places and stitch together by hand. The fold will form the top of
the scissors case. Leave ½ " on each upper side unstitched to form casing for cording
Fold bottom end up 3" This will form the pocket for the scissors. Hand stitch the 2 sides to the
back fold.
Bead around all five sides with picot stitch** (both sides, bottom, top and across the fold of scissors
pocket. Always tie off threads securely. I tie off where I end, hiding thread, then go under the seam line
approximately 1" and tie off one additional time.
**NOTE: See instructions for picot edging in the article for making the miser's purse.
Beaded Tassel:
Using the same beads as the picot edging, cover the wooden bead. String the number of beads necessary
to cover from top to bottom hole. Circle through hole and string another row of the same number of
beads. Continue this step until the wooden bead is completely covered.
I have found it easier to hold several inches of thread in my hand until I have several rows of
beads strung around the wooden bead. I then tie off securely, going through several beads and clip
this end.
Make 5 loops using beads of choice and secure to bottom of beaded wooden bead. Each loop measures
approximately 1". I vary each loop by several beads to prevent all 5 from being the same length.
Hide knot in the seam at the bottom center of scissors case. Add 3 beads - one small, 1 larger,
one small - and run beading needle through beaded wooden bead. Insert needle and run thread back up
through the wooden bead and the 3 strung beads and knot securely to scissors case.
Needle Cushion:
Construction:
Iron fusible fleece to wrong side of ribbon
Iron under two raw edges for seam allowance
Stitch together all 4 sides.
Bead around all 4 sides with picot stitch
Securely attach beading thread through circle end of lobster clasp
Bead sequence of matching beads to measure approximately 3" ending with seed bead
Skip the last seed bead and run thread back through all the strung beads for extra security.
Tie off.
Hide knot into one corner of needle cushion and stitch through 5 beads on opposite end of the clip.
Skip 5th bead and run back through last 4 beads. Tie off securely and attach the clip end to scissors
handle.
Optional Row of Beading on Picot Stitch:
The picot stitch makes a triangle - 2 beads on the seam line and 1 bead in the center of these two
beads. Hide knot in fabric and come up through one of the beads on the seam line, then through the
next center top bead. String 2 beads and go through the next center top bead. String 2 and continue
this step until you have gone around all the picot edging. It will form a lacy, ruffled effect.
Using Fabric instead of Ribbon:
This scissors case is made from a piece of fabric. It works well but has more bulk in the seam
line since there must be a seam allowance on all 4 sides. If using fabric, make sure fusible
fleece is not in any seam.
Cut fabric for scissors case 2 1/2" x 16"
Cut needle cushion 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
Follow the directions above
