I had the honor of teaching a Beginners Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery Class at the Crazy Quilt Society Retreat in Omaha, Nebraska, this past June. This needle art form works well with Crazy Quilting and I love spreading the word. This year I had 14 students and hopefully wet their whistle to continue learning this art. We covered a brief history of BDE, getting familiar with the threads, several basic BDE stitches and sources for supplies.

I joined several great teachers: Helen Gibbs (Silk Ribbon), Martha Green (Crazy Quilting), Bonnie Turner (Flower Pounding) and Lisa Caryl (Crazy Quilting). Nancy Kirk, the founder of this group, held a pre conference workshop on Beginning Crazy Quilting and a post conference class on Marketing and Promotion for Teachers.

For those of you not familiar with this Society, Nancy Kirk has held this retreat for the past several years. It is always in June and at Omaha, Nebraska. It is a non profit group, a program of the Quilt Heritage Foundation based in Omaha, publishing an informative quarterly newsletter produced for members, but you don't have to be a member to attend the conference.

Along with the superb classes, many fun activities take place during this conference. Attendees are welcomed on Thursday night with a Chocolate and Chat gathering. On Friday night there is the Fiber Exchange followed by the Prom Dress Swap. Saturday late afternoon is the Scholarship Silent Auction and the Show and Tell session. Monies raised at this Silent Auction provides funds for scholarships for the next year's retreat. A drawing is held during this time to determine the winner of the Raffle Wall Hangings. Let me explain this a little further....during the year previous to the conference, members of this group contribute crazy quilt blocks....these are made into wall hangings by designated members of this group and raffled off ($5.00 a ticket) to anyone interested. The money raised by this auction is divided between the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Crazy Quilt Society Scholarship fund. This year there was an exhibit of Crazy Quilt Embellished Bras made by members. What creative gals we have in this group.

The past few years this retreat was held at the Doubletree Suites Hotel. The class rooms are of a good size and well lighted. The staff is most accommodating. The rooms for us are quite nice. They come with a kitchenette that house a coffee maker, small refrigerator and a wet sink. There is a living area with a double sofa-sleeper couch and a bedroom with two queen size beds. A full bathroom and an additional vanity area make this suite easy to share with other CQ attendees to cut your expense.

I highly recommend attending this retreat next June. Besides the great learning experience, you get to meet many crazy quilters, join in the fun festivities and perhaps win a wall hanging.... I was lucky to win two of them at this retreat .
