The 2009 Crazy Quilt Retreat in Omaha, Nebraska, will be here before you know it. This year’s retreat will once again be held at the Doubletree Suites Hotel in Omaha on July 10, 11, and 12.

The retreat will officially kick off with a get together on Thursday evening, July 9th. We will have Show and Tell; everyone is invited to bring their crazy quilt projects to share. You will have a chance to get a close-up look at the work of your peers and take lots of pictures. If this year is like previous years, then there will be lots of eye candy to be inspired by and to drool over!

Classes will start at 9:00 Friday the 10th. Each day there will be three classes to choose from. Please visit the website at www.crazyquilt.com for detailed descriptions and photos of the classes.

This year’s slate of teachers is exceptional! Helen Gibb will be back this year. She will be teaching two different days. Her classes are “Island Paradise Brooch” and “Ribbon Collage Postcard.” Lisa Caryl will once again be teaching. Her classes are “Springtime in Paris Box” and “Fantasea Reef Wall Hanging.” Jay Rich, local instructor from Omaha, will also be teaching two classes; “Texturing Silks for Embellishments” and “Stitched Resist Dying on Silk.” Mary Anne Griffin will be teaching this year. Her classes are “Beading Beyond the Seams” and “Felting by Hand and Machine.” Sherrill Lewis from the Bead Ranch will teach one class on Sunday called “Quick and Easy Beaded Motifs.” All-in-all the classes look wonderful!

Friday evening we will once again hold our famous “Great FEX” (great fiber exchange) and Prom Dress Swap. For the fiber exchange you cut off thirty one-yard pieces of fancy fibers (like a funky specialty yarn or thread or ribbon). You place those individual pieces into thirty zipper bags (one piece in each bag - snack size works great). You then place all thirty bags into one larger bag. We stand in a circle and start passing those larger bags to the right, with each person taking out one zipper bag. When the last bag is empty, each person should have accumulated thirty different one-yard pieces to add to your embellishment stash. The Great FEX is followed by the prom dress swap.

You haven’t experienced a retreat until you take part in the great “prom and wedding dress hack-up.” We always have a short style show before the Prom Dress Swap to show off a couple of the “gowns” we will be cutting up and sharing with each other. Bring a used prom or wedding dress (you can wash and dry it first, please), a pair of scissors, and a bag in which to put the fabrics you acquire. Believe me, you will go home with enough fabrics to make some really nice crazy quilt blocks.

Saturday afternoon after classes, we will hold our annual silent and live auction. Proceeds go to the Crazy Quilt Society, with part of the live auction proceeds also going to benefit breast cancer research. There will once again be a raffle held of crazy quilt wall hangings made from blocks donated by crazy quilters from all over the world. A few of the smallest wall hangings will be put on the live auction. Proceeds from the raffle are split the same as the auction items.

If you want a break from the hum-drum of everyday living, come along and join us in Omaha this July. This is a great time to get together with other people that have the same crazy quilt addiction that you do. We talk and laugh until our faces hurt. Come and join us for more fun than you can imagine. You will make some life-long friendships along the way.

We hope you’ll join us at this year’s retreat. There are so many great classes it may be difficult to decide which one to take. To stay up-to-date on the retreat and other society news, be sure to also join the Crazy Quilt Society. Membership in the Crazy Quilt Society is at free of charge. Retreat fees and hotel information are also posted on the website. If you need information about sharing a room, or just have further questions you would like answered, you can contact me privately by email at cqbunch@charter.net - be sure to put Omaha Crazy Quilt Retreat in the subject area of your email to me, so that I don’t miss it.

This will be my 11th consecutive retreat. I hope to see you there!
